Drive through the countryside in spring and you can read the differences from the road. Here a trunk that goes up new every year, there one that has stood for four. Here strong white and blue, there bare wood. The idea is the same everywhere, the execution nowhere.
What keeps the custom going
Clubs keep it going. The Burschenverein, the local club of young men, the Trachtenverein in its traditional dress, the volunteer fire brigade: they supply the hands, the tools and the nights spent guarding the tree. Without them hardly a maypole would stand, and with them the custom passes from one generation to the next, usually without anyone saying much about it.
From place to place
The differences are in the detail. Some places raise a new tree every year, others every few years. In one village the fire brigade does the lifting, in the next a maypole club of its own. The rules of maypole stealing are not equally strict everywhere either. What stays the same is the core: the tree belongs to the place, and the ransom is paid in beer and Brotzeit, the bread and cold cuts that go with it.
The maypole in the city
That a village custom survives in a city of more than a million is not a given. In Munich it has held on, at the Viktualienmarkt as a landmark and in the districts that have a tree of their own. That city version is what these pages are about.
