It is a sign of spring, the self-portrait of a place and a pledge, all in one. Which of those layers comes to the front depends on who is looking. All of them are told.
Spring and fertility
The best-known reading sees the maypole as a sign of spring. On that view the green, upright tree stands for vital force, for growth and for the victory of the warm season over the cold, and many take the wreath at the top for a sign of fertility. The reading is popular, but younger than it sounds: it spread mainly in the 19th century, an ancient fertility cult cannot be demonstrated, and folklorists today are wary of such derivations. What is certain is that the tree is set up in spring and announces the month of May.
The community
The most visible meaning hangs on the trunk: the Zunftzeichen, the emblems of the guilds. They show the trades and clubs of a place and make the tree a directory of the people who live and work there. And because every place picks its own plaques, the tree also says what matters here.
A contract in wood
A further meaning only comes about through maypole stealing. As long as the tree is lying down it can, by old custom, be carried off and handed back for a ransom. Here the maypole is less a symbol than a social game with clear, unwritten rules, one that holds a neighbourhood together because both sides take it seriously.
